Special Delivery: NICU Books!

One day while Rowan was in the NICU, I received a very special delivery from a dear cousin. Books! We both have teaching degrees, so we both know the value of reading to kids, babies too! Even the tiniest of babies can benefit from hearing stories read aloud. Listening to parents’ voices is soothing and familiar, and it’s therapeutic for moms and dads to interact with their babies in this loving way. At the beginning of a NICU journey, this might be one of the only things parents can do with their littles.

In the box that was delivered to me was an assortment of great children’s literature, but one book stood out among the rest: Peanut, A Storybook for Mighty Preemie Babies by Lindsey Nolan. I had no idea that there were story books out there about babies like mine! I read it to myself before I read it to Rowan, and tears just streamed down my face. The search was on to find more books like this one!

Baby Rowan owns all the books on this list, and we have read them over and over. What makes these so special besides the tiny superhero main characters is that most of them were written by NICU parents or nurses! I’d recommend checking them out even if you’re hospital days are behind you because I know they will be a great resource one day when I explain to Rowan what a miracle he is.

NICU Books We Love

1. PEANUT, A STORYBOOK FOR MIGHTY PREEMIE BABIES BY LINDSEY NOLAN

My favorite line:  “Little Peanut grew and grew, a mighty peanut through and through, he had to be tougher, as life was much rougher for him than most peanuts he knew.” For more details, click HERE.

2. SOON BY JESSICA WATSON

A favorite line: “You learned important baby things…how to stay warm and how to breathe by yourself. You would be stronger soon.” The illustrations in this book are touching! Click HERE and choose “Look Inside” to see for yourself!

3. FIONA THE HIPPO BY RICHARD COWDREY

If you missed the news story a while back about Fiona the preemie hippo, check out the video below.

My favorite line: “Her name was Fiona and she arrived earlier than expected. The zookeepers snuggled her and loved her. And the whole world watched.” Click HERE to check it out!

4. GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES, I WAS A PREEMIE BY CANDY CAMPBELL, R.N.

My favorite line: “Grandma says I weighed about as much as a pound of butter, and that I was twice as soft and smelled twice as nice. I didn’t even know butter had a smell.” I like this one the best! If you didn’t notice, it was written by a NICU nurse! You can see her book HERE.

5. TINY ADVENTURES OF A MICRO PREEMIE BY OLGA & LUIS PINHEIRO

My favorite line: “They put me in a glass house and tried to poke me with tubes. Boy, were they surprised to see my Kung Fu moves!” This one has a really unique style of illustrations. See it HERE.

BONUS: LOOK LOOK! BY PETER LINENTHAL

This book is not specifically aimed at NICU babes, but I thought I’d mention it on my NICU books list anyway. Look Look! is a high contrast book. These black and white books may not be appealing to adults, but they are perfect for babies’ eyes. There is research that shows they support vision and brain development. Since I wanted to help Rowan in any way I possibly could, I felt it was important to get him one. There are tons of high contrast books out there like THIS one.

I hope you will share some of these NICU books with your baby, their siblings, and other young family members and friends. What are your favorite stories to read to your babies? Share yours below!
